KATS Sea Skills Instructors
All of the instructors in the KATS sea skills program are volunteers. They come from all walks of life and many different countries. Volunteering is a huge commitment for most of our instructors. They start out months in advance of the first session, training, inventorying gear and uniforms, repairing boats and docks, and gathering all the supplies necessary to put on the program. They forsake their Saturday mornings for over 3 months. They often are on the phone with their student team members during the week assisting them with homework, rides to class or even a family problem. KATS students truly become "our" kids during the 12 weeks that we meet. We follow them through future KATS programs and even their academic studies. After 16 years, many of our graduates are young adults. We remain keenly interested in their careers, and some even come back as instructors themselves.
For the past few years, the volunteers have come primarily from the Rotaract Club of Tortola, a Service Organization comprised of young adults from 18-30. They have become the backbone of the Sea Skills program.
