Question:
How old do you have to be to join KATS?
Answer:
KATS was originally designed for 8-14 year olds. When the program migrated to the BVI, it was decided to change the age to 9-15. The subject matter is pretty challenging for a 9 year old, so is over the head of many 8 year olds. Size is also an issue as the kids have to manage a 7 foot oar! Having said that, if we have a fairly mature and big 8 year old, we will sometimes make an exception.
Question:
How often and where do you meet?
Answer:
We meet every Saturday, rain or shine (including the occasional Tropical Storm) from 0900-1200 at the Marine Studies Centre at H Lavity Stoutt Community College. The first session is always held at Stanleys in Cane Garden Bay. That day, we do a swim test, health review and distribute uniforms to the kids. After that first session, all other sessions are held at HLSCC. It is essential that the children are at HLSCC promptly at 0900 and are picked up at 1200. We start on time and tardiness is on the student's part results in their team losing points.
Question:
What pre-requisites are there to joining the sea skills programs?
Answer:
Children must be between 9 and 15, have basic swimming skills and be in good health. We put all the children through a short swim test and health review during the first session, which is held at Stanley's in Cane Garden Bay. We very seldom have to refuse a child on health reasons. As long as their instructor knows about a medical condition, he or she can keep an eye out for that student or exclude them from a particular activity that might put them at risk.

How do I sign up?
Answer:
KATS are signed up on a first come, first served basis. We take our first 28 students who qualify. You can pre-register by calling 494-2830 and speaking to Tom Gerker or Gladys Jones. We will call out the names of the children in the order that they registered at 0900 at Session I. If the child is not present we go on to the next.
